McCloskey’s five-pack bread rolls have been issued a product recall

The major retail chain pulled the food item after it was deemed unsafe.

Dunnes Stores took the bread rolls off the shelves due to undeclared sesame seeds, meaning it was not listed in the products ingredients.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has since issued a statement about the product recall.

They said: “The above batches of McCloskey’s Crusty Rolls contain sesame seeds which are not declared in the list of ingredients.”

“This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sesame seeds.”

The product recall was issued on Tuesday, 28 May, and only relates to the five pack of McClosley’s crusty roles.

The batches of roles affected by the recall had the use by dates of 28.05.24, 29.05.24 and 31.05.24.

On Dunnes Stores’ website, they have said that customers are advised not to consume this product.

The website reads: “We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.”

Those with a food allergy to sesame seeds could have some serious reactions if it was consumed.

A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to specific foods it mistakes as a threat.

As a result, some chemicals are released. These chemicals cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Although allergy symptoms are often mild, they can be serious.

Allergy Symptoms

Some common symptoms of an allergic reaction to sesame seeds include a burning or itchy sensation inside your mouth, throat or ears, swelling of the face, around the eyes, lips, tongue and roof of the mouth and a raised itchy red rash or hives generally around the face.

It may also cause stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea.

If you have a sesame seed allergy, these symptoms usually occur straight away after consuming foods that contain it.

However, in some cases symptoms don’t occur until one or two hours after first consuming.

The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to identify the food that causes the allergy and avoid it.

To relieve the symptoms of an allergic reaction to sesame seeds, antihistamines usually help with the pain.

If your allergy symptoms persist after an hour, you should contact your GP as it could lead to serious complications.
