Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Royal Ascot on ITV
For day one of Britain’s best loved Flat fixture our man has at cut three of the big races and believes there is value in backing Silver Sword in the penultimate contest
Put the bookies to the Sword in the Wolferton Stakes.
SILVER SWORD (5.40) will love the quick ground in this 1m2f Listed contest and he should bounce back to form with conditions in his favour.
Incredibly, he refused to race in his first two starts just a couple of years ago but those uncooperative efforts are just a distant memory as he’s developed into a smart performer.
He bolted up on Southwell’s all-weather track early last season before chasing home Torito – among the favourites for today’s race – in a hot Epsom handicap.
His handicap wins later in the season at Pontefract and York both came on quick going.
The ground hasn’t been in his favour since stepping up to Listed and group races but he’s shown enough to suggest he’s well up to this level. Have 2pts each-way at 50-1.
The Queen Anne Stakes – the traditional Royal Ascot curtain raiser – looks a wide-open contest this year.
MALJOOM (2.30) has clearly had his problems since finishing a desperately-unlucky fourth behind Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes on this day two years ago.
He’s only been seen on the track twice since that half-length defeat but he showed enough on his first run of this season, when third in a course-and-distance Listed race, to suggest he’s still got plenty of ability.
A return to hold-up tactics in a race that’s likely to be run at a strong pace on faster ground should also be in his favour. Have 1pt each-way at 14-1. Most bookies are paying out on four places.
Jumps trainers have an excellent record in the Ascot Stakes.
Alan King trained Coeur De Lion to win this marathon handicap four years ago and his TRITONIC (5.05) looks to have a sound chance this time.
He’s a strong stayer, as he showed when third in this race 12 months ago, and he went on to win on his chase debt in November.
His two Flat runs on the all-weather this year didn’t really play to his strengths and he has become well handicapped. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. Several bookies are going six places with Sky Bet stretching to seven.
