VHSL state tennis recap: Salem’s Perez, PH’s Rincon claim singles crowns

Salem sophomore Drew Perez capped off a near perfect season this spring by winning the Class 4 boys tennis singles state championship Saturday at Huntington Park in Newport News.

Perez beat Broad Run’s Neel Pasunuri 6-3, 6-0 in the title match to capture the state crown and finish off the season with a 20-1 record.

On the adjacent court, fellow River Ridge District player Ana Maria Rincon won a title of her own. The Patrick Henry sophomore defeated Riverside’s Maddie Tran 6-4, 6-3 in the Class 5 girls singles championship to claim back-to-back state titles.

In an all-Southwest Virginia matchup at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Marion junior Parker White won the Class 2 girls singles championship with a gripping 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory over Lydia Pratt of Radford. The win comes a day after White and partner Madelyn Austin lost in three sets to Pratt and Claire Fender in the Class 2 doubles title match.
