VHSL STATE TENNIS: Richlands, Marion doubles lose in finals; four singles players compete for state titles on Saturday

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Richlands sophomore Jack Clem defeated Preston Bernier of Clarke County, 6-3, 6-1, in a Class 2 singles semifinal on Friday at Liberty University.

Clem, who is the defending state champion, will play for a second straight title on Saturday against Chris Schweitzer of Bruton, who defeated Keyshawn Phipps of Grayson County, 6-2, 7-5.

The championship match begins at 10 a.m.

The news wasn’t as good for Clem and doubles partner Cooper Hurst, who lost in the Class 2 state doubles title match to the Bruton duo of Max De Winter and Schweitzer on Friday, 6-3, 6-4.

Woodall, White, Bays in state title matches

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Grayson Woodall of Abingdon advanced to the Class 3 state singles championship with a 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 10-6 semifinal victory over Martina Ribera of Maggie Walker on Friday at Liberty University.

Woodall will face Western Albemarle’s Blythe Sturman in the finals on Saturday at 10 a.m. Sturman blanked Val Crespo of Tabb, 6-0, 6-0.

Marion’s Parker White will look for her third straight Class 2 state singles championship on Saturday after defeating Addyson Mooney of Fort Defiance, 6-2, 6-0, on Friday at Liberty.

White, who led Marion to its second straight Class 2 team crown on Thursday, will face Radford’s Lydia Pratt on Saturday at 10 a.m. Pratt advanced past Randolph-Henry’s Emily Tharpe, 6-3, 6-1.

Abby Bays made it a clean sweep for area tennis singles standouts with a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 Class 1 state semifinal victory over Alex DiGrassie of Buffalo Gap on Friday at Liberty University.

Bays will face Sadie Packett of Rappahannock in the finals on Saturday at 10 a.m. Packet defeated Autumn Bowles of Giles, 6-4, 6-1.

Marion’s White and doubles partner Maggie Austin lost in the Class 2 state doubles finals to Claire Fender and Pratt of Radford, 1-6, 6-2 (10-7).
