Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save the local factory worker.

His body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar ahead of a post-mortem.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballymahon Garda Station on 090 6432303, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

It was reported that Mr Machnowski had been living and working in the south Longford town for 16 years, and the vast bulk of that time was spent as an employee with local timber manufacturing outlet, Ronaynes Wood Products.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, its managing director Jarlath Ronayne said Mr Machnowski’s death had come as a considerable shock, describing the man as a “highly though of and hard worker” who had spent the past 16 years with the Creevaghbeg-based outfit.
