There is widespread shock in Castleisland following a suspected fatal assault last night that led to the death of a man in his 40s.

The man has been identified locally as Paudie O’Connor who is well-known in the community.

The incident occurred at An Caisleán Mor housing estate on the Lyrecrompane Road.

Gardaí were alerted to the scene at approximately 12.30am after emergency services received a report of an unresponsive male with serious injuries.

The man, aged in his 40s, has been pronounced dead following an incident at a house in the estate. It is understood he had been attending a funeral yesterday.

It is understood the alarm was raised by another man who sought assistance from the neighbours.

The Kerryman reported that neighbours tried to save the man’s life but were unable to do so and he tragically passed away on the lawn outside the house. It is understood the house belonged to the mother of the deceased.

The community in the housing estate are shocked by what occurred there last night.

Local councillor Bobby O’Connell said it is a terrible incident for families with young children to wake up to this morning.

“This is a residential area where families and children live. Everyone is shocked. It is sad for the family and for the community. I am sure everyone will rally around the family now. They are well known in the community.”

The offices of the State Pathologist have been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place later today.

A second man in his 40s is in garda custody under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and is being held at a garda station in the county.

Gardaí are at the scene and a search is continuing at the scene.

Local councillor Charlie Farrelly said the community is stunned following the terrible tragedy.

“We are stunned. It is a tragedy. I want to offer my sympathies to his mother,” he said.

The family have roots in Scartaglen but live in Castleisland. The deceased worked as a labourer with local builders.
