VU alumni team set for return to The Basketball Tournament

Valparaiso men’s basketball alumni will once again take to the court this summer for a chance to win $1 million.

The Basketball Tournament was started in 2014 as an open-application, winner-take-all event. The yearly tournament has attracted teams largely made of alumni from Division I schools or overseas professional leagues.

In 2022, The Cru — a team of mostly Valparaiso alumni — played in its first TBT, losing to NFT-sponsored team the Gutter Cat Gang in the first round.

The Cru is slated to start this year’s iteration of the tournament against Assembly Ball, a team of Indiana alumni. The game will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse on July 19 at 7 p.m. Central and broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

This year’s roster features seven former Beacons as well as players with Region ties.

Jubril Adekoya, Joseph Burton, Bakari Evelyn, Jay Harris, Cory Johnson, Max Joseph and Mileek McMillan make up the contingent of former Valparaiso players.

Bishop Noll alumnus Roman Penn — who played his college ball at Drake — is joined by Yoan Makoundou, Isaiah Burnett, Derrick Nix, Dabriawn Johnson and former Barstool personality Mantis to round out the roster.

The Butler Regional will also feature Men of Mackey, a team of Purdue alumni, and All Good Dogs, a team of Butler alumni.
