Major infrastructure backlogs running to billions of rand, a lack of maintenance at 88 000 government buildings around the country and a major and controversial political issue – expropriation without compensation – will be among the issues new Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson will have to confront.
Macpherson, a 39-year-old DA MP from eThekwini and the party’s chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal, got the nod to take over the portfolio, becoming the third person to hold the job in the past three years.
He is one of six DA ministers in the new government of national unity (GNU) Cabinet President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday night.
