Walmart to pay $1.2 million after employee’s shopping cart strike in Atlanta
A woman has been awarded a whopping $1.2 million after being hit by a shopping cart in Walmart. An Atlanta woman, Tammy Callihan, was granted a $1.2 million verdict after she was struck by a shopping cart pushed by a Walmart employee in 2020, as reported by WSB-TV.
According to the report, Callihan suffered injuries to her neck and back and aggravated a pre-existing disc herniation that necessitated spinal surgery. “We’re pleased the jury recognized the impact the severe injuries had on Ms. Callihan’s life. She now experiences daily, recurrent pain that limits the activities of her daily life, including holding her grandchildren and walking her dog.
“I’m proud we were able to secure justice for our client and provide her with some peace of mind as she moves forward with her life,” said Morgan & Morgan attorney Robert Fickett, as per WSB-TV. WSB-TV also reported that Callihan’s attorneys initially turned down a $350,000 settlement offer from Walmart.
Meanwhile, Walmarts are shutting down across the US, signaling a grim future for retail shoppers, warns retail experts. The multi-billion dollar corporation has already closed nine stores this year, which could serve as a warning to other retail giants.

Walmart, which runs 5,000 stores in the US, is also reportedly laying off hundreds of corporate staff as it encourages remote workers to return to the office. Retail analyst Neil Saunders told Yahoo that the closures initiated by Walmart in 2016, documented by retail photographer Nicholas Eckhart, marked the start of a trend in store reductions.
“The blunt truth is that while stores remain a vital part of the retail mix, they are not quite as relevant as they used to be,” the expert shared with the outlet. “Walmart’s decision is part of a larger shift that will be played out across all parts of the retail sector over the coming year and beyond,” reports The US Sun.
