Rory McIlroy remains very much in the mix to end his 10-year Major drought after a 69 in the third round of the US Open at Pinehurst yesterday.

Bryson DeChambeau is three shots clear of the field on -7, but McIlory is nicely placed in second at -4, along with Patrick Cantlay and Matthieu Pavon.

McIlroy bogeyed two of his last four holes but knows his US Open dream is still alive: “I love the test that Pinehurst is presenting, and you’ve got to focus and concentrate on every single shot out there. It’s what a US Open should be like. It’s obviously great to be in the mix.”

Shane Lowry shot ,what he described as, the best level par round of his life while tournament newcomer Tom McKibbin had a superb round too, and he’s a shot further back. His 33 on the back nine was second best of the day.

Paul Kimmage and Brian Keogh review the day’s play and look ahead to the prospect of a thrilling final round on Sunday.
