‘We should get Trump back for another game of golf in Clare’
The attempted assassination of Donald Trump over the weekend has almost certainly sealed his re-election as the next President of the United States.
The iconic picture of him waving his arm in the air seconds after he was shot will be remembered by every American voter when they go to the polls in November. They will admire his bravery, his courage, and his humility afterwards even if they have previous doubts about him.
But more importantly they would rather him in the White House than an obviously partly senile President Biden, who is sadly slowing up by the day.

Here at home most people I speak to hate Trump and don’t understand why Americans would vote for him. But I have spent a lot of time in the United States in the past few years and here is why – he stands up for the little people, the ordinary hard working families across the United States who are sick and tired of the neo-liberal elites.
He speaks the truth about the failure of the Democrats to seal their borders and allow millions and millions of illegal immigrants into the country. The vast majority of Americans treasure their way of life but they despise big Government and national legislators dictating what they can or not do.
Many millions upon millions have Christian values and deplore the Woke brigade who are obsessed with political correctness and want to rewrite history. The idea the Democrats peddled that Trump is some sort of modern day Hitler is nonsense.
He did not cover himself in glory by failing to call a halt to the infamous January 6,2020 Capitol Hill insurrection, reluctant to accept election defeat and hand over power. But at the same time the Democrats were absolutely wrong to pursue him by the politicisation of the courts over the payment of hush money to a porn star. No previous former President of the United States had been hunted down like he had.
America at the moment is a seriously divided country where the central and sensible middle ground is being swallowed up by the forces of the left and the right. Some days you feel you are in the middle of a civil war. Donald Trump said it is a miracle and perhaps God’s will that he survived. If he had not turned his head away to show a chart when he did, he most certainly would have been killed.
Trump now appears to have changed his normally volatile and incendiary tone after surviving this assassination attempt. He will call for national unity at the Republican convention later this week. Both sides of the political divide need to turn down the rhetoric. It was good that he and President Biden had a civilised conversation hours after the attack.
We have hardly heard from Trump’s wife Melania during the Presidential campaign so far. But perhaps some of the wisest words came from her as she called for more respect and love in America. She said; “Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy and political games are inferior to love. Our personal, structural, and life commitment – until death – is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to human beings.
“We are all human and fundamentally , instinctively, we want to help one another. American politics are only one vehicle that can uplift our communities. Love, compassion, kindness and empathy are necessities. Let us remember that when the time comes to look beyond the left and the right, beyond the red and the blue, we all come from families with the passion to fight for a better life together while we are here in this earthly realm.”
Last November I played golf in the Bronx, New York, where there is a massive Irish community. Three Irish Americans I met were all voting for Trump because they felt the America they grew up in and loved was dying a death. They were sick of illegal immigrants swamping the country and their sons and daughters being sent to fight in wars across the globe. They are sick of America being the policeman of the world.
During his last term in office Trump didn’t cause any wars. He will want to end the conflict in Ukraine and will do a deal with Putin. The billions and billions of American dollars – 100 billion in fact so far – will be stopped. The Ukrainians will be forced to give up some original Russian territories back to Moscow.
He will continue to support NATO but expect all members including its European allies to pay their fair share. There will also be tariffs on imports to America which will be damaging for the EU. The mandarins in Brussels will have no choice but to work with the Trump administration.
Many people across Europe are worried that the war in Ukraine will spread to them. They also fear a nuclear attack. Maybe Trump’s survival and a second Trump Presidency can be a force for good. Maybe this time around it might just bring peace to places that need it.
Our Government needs to play smart and build relationships with the Republican leadership in Washington. America has always been one of our greatest allies but for far too long we have put all our eggs in the Democratic Party basket. If Trump is elected we should get him back for another game of golf in his beloved Doonbeg golf course in County Clare.
Love him or hate him it is very hard to ignore Donald Trump. But his re-election after the chaotic events of the weekend make him an unstoppable force. It doesn’t matter if the Democrats dump Joe Biden, Trump won’t be beaten now. The world awaits with baited breath.
