A DAY that they will never forget – that is how Dervla Buttimer and Jonathan Lynch recall their special wedding.
Dervla is from Blackrock, Jonathan is from Cork city centre, but spent a lot of time growing up in Shanbally. They now live in Passage West.
Jonathan recalled: “We met in 2016 in Eclipse nightclub after being introduced by Maid of Honour Carley Larkin during a night out.”
Their paths crossed again a few weeks later in East Village, and they haven’t looked back since.
They got engaged in the Kingsley Hotel in April, 2019.
“I had organised a suite room to be arranged with Champagne and chocolates as I was so afraid she would say ‘no’, I didn’t want to do it in a public place,” said Jonathan.
Dervla said ‘yes’ and they celebrated with family at an engagement party in Soho a few weeks later.
They were married at St Michael’s Church in Blackrock by Father Michael Keohane on April 19 this year.
Jonathan’s brother John travelled from Perth with his partner Jacqui and three kids Sean, Kaitlin and Seamus. Sean and Seamus walked down the aisle with briefcases, walkie talkies, and sunglasses in Men In Black fashion as “ring security”.
Wedding singer Jennifer Lyons had people in tears with her amazing voice.
The reception was held in the Oriel House Hotel in Ballincollig, the sun was splitting the stones, and magician Gerard Kearney kept the guests entertained.
Music on the night was by J90, who kept everyone on the dance floor all night. The cake was made by Cakes by Ruari and was half Liverpool theme and half traditional wedding cake. Wedding cars were supplied by East Cork Cabs.
Their first dance was to by Ed Sheeran (hence our headline!), a song which is very special to them, as their first holiday as a couple was in Tenerife, while they are also big Ed Sheeran fans, having seen him perform many times.
As to the most memorable thing about the day? The groom said: “We had a black-out walking into the room, whilst every guest was supplied with a personalised glow stick and had the song by Chasing Abbey playing. As the doors opened, the whole room erupted and it’s something neither of us will forget.”
Special mention to Kirsty (wedding co-ordinator) and Michael (F&B manager) in the Oriel House Hotel for making the day so special.
