A search-and-rescue operation was launched at Binn Bán, near Dingle, on Wednesday afternoon following a report that an angler may have fallen into the sea.

However, the search was later stood down when it emerged that a person, who is thought to have been the missing angler, had been seen walking to Dingle.

Emergency services were called at about 4.30pm when a fishing rod and a pair of sandals were found at a clifftop near Binn Bán, just outside Dingle Harbour. There was no direct evidence that an angler had fallen into the sea but Dingle Coast Guard conducted an extensive search of the area, backed up by an RNLI rescue helicopter and a number of local fishing and leisure boats.

At around 8pm, the search was called off after nothing was found to suggest an angler had actually gone into the water. Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed reports that a barefoot man was seen walking towards Dingle from the Binn Bán direction.
