What happened to Kate Moss’ debauched party posse?

Kate Moss was once known for her wild child partying ways as she chain-smoked her way through the 2000s and attended the hottest events in town.

So when she turned 30 and hosted her bash in a penthouse suite at London institution Claridge’s Hotel in January 2004, it was always set to be the party of the century – which is being recreated for the upcoming biopic Moss & Freud, starring Ellie Bamber as the supermodel.

The glamorous shindig saw some of the world’s most famous faces descend on London’s West End to celebrate with the birthday girl; all dressed to the nines in stunning outfits in line with the theme, The Beautiful and The Damned.

After getting ready at Claridge’s the party decamped to Sam Taylor Wood’s house where they were eventually thrown out for making too much noise at 1.45am, so it was back to the suite to continue the party.

One guest recalled revellers snorting cocaine and ‘a flare of naked limbs and people entwined on the bed’ in one of the suite’s bedrooms.

There were scantily-clad waiters, a blacked-out room with a DJ in the corner where, at one point, fashion designer Bella Freud could be found dancing alone.

Kate Moss’s 30th birthday party has gone down in history as one of the most notorious celebrations London has ever seen as A-Listers descended on Mayfair to attend the bash at Claridge’s (pictured: the birthday girl with her mother Linda and other guests)
The birthday girl looked sensational in a diesel blue sequin outfit in line with the theme; the Beautiful and The Damned

Kate’s hair was styled in a riot of curls for the evening and she dressed in a diesel blue sparkling gown. Her eyelids loaded with heavy navy and graphite shadow in a sort of darkly glamorous look that reeked of smudged dishevelment from the get-go.

She completed the aesthetic look with a long, diesel blue, sequined dress out of which she stripped almost as soon as her tanned toes touched the shagpile of her Claridge’s suite later that night.

And there was cake — a towering pyramid of profiteroles dipped in, and glistening with, honey, toasted almonds, cream and rose petals. Kate blew out the candles to cheers and applause.

And perhaps the most memorable aspect of the party was its sensational guestlist – supermodels, actors, singers were among the huge names who partied the night away with Kate.

The Moss of today, a ‘spiritual warrior’ who has gone teetotal and promotes wellness, has distanced herself from the debauchery of the booze and drug fuelled evening.

But where are these party animals who attended the event of the century today? Femail delves back inside Kate Moss’s notorious 30th birthday party and reveals what became of the revellers who made history…

SADIE FROST

Sadie Frost arrived at the party of the centuy in a silky red dress with a brooch, a cowl neck and a burgundy handbag

The actress arrived at Claridge’s in a sultry red silk dress with diamanté brooch detailing and jewellery dripping with diamonds and was at the heart of the drunken antics on the night.

Unflattering images appeared of Sadie in the press next day, after she suffered a wardrobe malfunction and exposed her breasts.

Reports at the time said her then husband Jude Law was furious over his wife’s antics and read her the riot act the next day.

A source told The Sun newspaper, ‘Jude phoned first thing on Sunday morning and really laid into her. The pictures in the paper were so unflattering of Sadie and he found them really embarrassing. Sadie spent most of Sunday crying on the phone to Kate.’

Since then, Sadie has remained close to Kate and coined the model’s new ‘spiritual warrior’ nickname when she shared photos of the supermodel’s 50th birthday celebrations in Mustique (which were much more low-key).

Joining her in the Caribbean, Sadie gave an insight into their wholesome holiday as she shared a snap of Kate wearing a flower crown.

She captioned the post: ‘All grown up darling Kate …happy 50th birthday… it was so so special celebrating your pre birthday with some of our beautiful friends.’

Sadie is still friends with Kate and recently celebrated the supermodel’s 50th birthday with her too

But as she celebrated Kate’s 30th birthday, Sadie joined in with the much less wholesome celebration which involved rock stars, booze, drugs and cigarettes.

Known in the 1990s for her wild child-style partying, Sadie has mellowed after becoming a mother and now has four children from previous relationships with Jude Law and Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp.

For the the best part of a decade she was in an off-on relationship with businessman Darren Strowger, which finally came to an end in 2021. She has recently revealed she is happily single.

NAOMI CAMPBELL

Naomi Campbell almost stole the show in a peach silk dress paired with a glittered bag and feathered shoulders

20 years later, Naomi is still attending the biggest showbiz parties around the world, as well as walking runways for Prada, Chanel, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry (Pictured at Cannes Film Festival 2024)

It’s not a supermodel’s birthday party without one of the world’s greatest in the field; Naomi Campbell.

The stunning model arrived at Claridge’s in a peach silk gown with a feather jacket and risked stealing the show from the birthday girl with her look, which was dripping with glamour from head to toe.

But she stayed out with her pal for most of the night and was almost one of the last people standing.

However, she announced her exit by telling guests she was going to bed before she ‘f***ing died of hunger’.

In the years since Kate Moss’s wild 30th birthday party, Naomi has moved away from her party girl image – but she is still often spotted at the hottest events in town.

In contrast to her fiery exit from Claridge’s in January 2004, Naomi is known to favour a so-called ‘Irish exit’ from parties these days, and often leaves in a low-key manner.

Last September the 53-year-old donned a pair of sunglasses as she opted for an incognito look as she departed the Perfect x Valentino party with Mohammed Al Turki.

While she is still one of the world’s most successful supermodels, she has become just as well-known in recent years for her philanthropy, through her work with Fashion for Relief.

And her new image is worlds away from the fiery diva who was known for throwing jewel-encrusted phones at assistants and has four convictions to her name.

She has also become a mother in recent years; having welcomed a daughter in 2021 and a son in 2023.

Hovever, she is fiercely private about her children, keeping even their names under wraps.

SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON

Film director Sam Taylor-Wood, who was relatively knew on the film scene at the time, hosted the after-party

Sam Taylor-Johnson (née Taylor-Wood) has been a giant in the film industry for decades, with titles including the Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey to her name. But at the time of the notorious party, she was still making a name for herself

But on the night of Kate Moss’s 30th birthday bash, the then-budding filmmaker was firmly in party mode – and offered her home as the venue for the after party.

However, Kate and her pals were too much for Sam’s neighbours to handle and soon enough a knock on the door from noise prevention officers sent at 1:45am sent the gang back to Claridge’s.

Although a relatively unknown figure in her industry at the time, Sam has gone on to make a name for herself – and drew plenty of attention from the eyes of film fans when she got together with her now-husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The director, 57, who married her spouse in 2012, three years after they met on the set of Nowhere Boy, is 24 years older than the actor, 33.

Sam admitted people’s initial interest in the couples relationship was ‘intense’ because ‘people want to understand things when they can’t’.

She revealed that the interest has now ‘gone away a little bit’ after the couple have now been together for 14 years.Discussing her relationship on BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life, she said: ‘I guess that interest was more when we got together, which was now 14 years – at the beginning, was quite intense.

‘And that sort of fascination, because he’s younger than me, which you know, we couldn’t really fathom the fascination. But I guess it’s sort of gone away a little bit.

‘Mostly when I’m doing press and things like this it sort of resurges a little bit. But yeah, I guess people want to understand things when they can’t.

‘They want to pick up art when they can’t fathom what a certain love story that doesn’t fit in a box is.’

STELLA MCCARTNEY

Stella McCartney, pictured arriving at the party with Chrissie Hynde, opted for a flapper headpiece with a silk champagne dress

The wheels on Stella McCartney’s fashion career were already in motion in 2004 when she was 32 years old, and it has only gone from strength to strength since.

She showed her fashion prowess as she arrived at Claridge’s in a champagne satin dress with a flapper-style headpiece.

Stella opted for a smokey eye and layered the dress with a cream trench coat.

The daughter of Beatles singer Sir Paul McCartney and pioneering vegetarian activist, the late Linda McCartney, Stella founded her fashion brand in 2001.

Stella McCartney is now one of the world’s most famous and successful fashion designers (pictured at the Met Gala with Ed Sheeran)

Just like her mother, Stella is a lifelong vegetarian and has never used fur, leather, skin or feathers in her clothing lines and prides herself on creating animal-friendly clothes.

At the time she attended Kate Moss’s notorious party, Stella had been married to her husband Alasdhair Wills, with whom she now shares four children.

She has also followed in her late mother’s footsteps in her activism, and teamed up with animal charity PETA to petition the Ministry of Defence to stop using fur from Canadian Black Bears in guards’ hats (although this change has not been brought into effect).

She went on to become the creative director for Team GB during the London 2012 Olympics, and marked the first time a leading fashion designer had taken charge of the apparel for the international sporting event.

As her fashion brand has continued to go from strength to strength, Stella’s impression on the industry has continued to grow.

In 2022, she received a CBE in recognition of her services to fashion and sustainability.

RONNIE WOOD

No party would be complete without a rockstar king and Ronnie Wood was the Rolling Stone selected to supply debauchery and chaos at Kate’s 30th.

He was reportedly off the booze at the time of the party, but quickly fell off the wagon for the occasion – later describing Kate as ‘a lovely nutcase’.

Though already in his 50s at the time of the party, during the celebrations, the bass guitarist subjected his stomach and liver to an entire bottle of Champagne served by semi-naked waiters after being seen polishing one off in a single sitting.

The musician is currently on The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds tour and has brought wife Sally, 46, and seven-year-old twin daughters with him

The musician arrived to the drug and booze soaked evening in a black velvet suit and a sparkling bow tie. His black woolfish hair looked typically undone, shaggily falling just at his shoulders.

Since the decadent night, Ronnie has made a number of serious life changes including divorcing his second wife Jo Wood in 2009 before remarrying the much younger, Sally Humphreys, 46, in 2012 with whom he has two subsequent children, twins Gracie Jane and Alice Rose.

However, these days the music legend is more interested in ‘natural highs’ having ditched drugs and booze for sipping green juice and light workouts with his personal trainer.

Ronnie has been open about his previous battles with addiction and abused cocaine, heroin and alcohol for years before getting clean for good in 2010.

Though the father of six may have given up the lifestyle, being a rock legend is still very much running in his blood.

The 77-year-old is currently on tour with the Rolling Stones for their Hackney Diamonds tour and is being joined by his seven-year-old twin daughters and wife Sally.

GWYNETH PALTROW

Gwyneth Paltrow attended the party while heavily pregnant with Coldplay singer Chris Martin’s baby – so although she likely witnessed some of the debauchery, she likely didn’t indulge herself

It’s hard now to imagine Gwyneth Paltrow in the same room of the seedy hedonism at Kate 30th.

The wellness guru was thought to have briefly popped in to give her best wishes to the birthday girl before making a swift exit as she arrived heavily pregnant with her then-husband Coldplay singer Chris Martin’s baby.

Since the party, the award-winning actress runs the controversial lifestyle brand, Goop, which she founded in 2008.

Gwyneth’s move into the wellness industry has seen her spearhead the Goop empire

However, Talented Mr Ripley star has faced streams of criticism since starting the brand with many of its products called thought to be based on hooky pseudoscience. She was also slammed in 2020 for selling the an infamous candle that was supposed to smell of the creator’s vagina.

The 51-year-old likely wouldn’t be caught dead indulging in such depravity as Kate’s party. She now has just one drink per week and consumes a high health conscious diet that includes bone broth and probiotics.

Since her brief Cinderella style appearance at the party, the mother of two has separated from ex-husband Chris Martin in 2024 in what the actress described as a ‘conscious uncoupling’.

The exes’ two now co-parent children Moses and their daughter Apple though both have remarried Gwyneth is now with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk.

Pharrell Williams

Pharrell, 51, hasn’t changed much since attending the famous party, but he has become even more stylish over the years.

In fact, he took his passion for fashion to the next level when starting his fashion label and retailer, Billionaire Boys Club.

He has also served as Men’s creative director for Louis Vuitton since 2023.

However, he first became known as one half of the hip hop and R&B production duo the Neptunes, which he formed in 1992 with Chad Hugo.

Pharrell has received numerous accolades and nominations. He has won 13 Grammy Awards, including three for Producer of the Year.

He is also a two-time Academy Award nominee, including one for Best Original Song for Happy and for Best Picture as a producer of Hidden Figures.

Pharrell married his longtime partner, model and fashion designer Helen Lasichanh in  2013. The couple have four children together: son Rocket, and triplets.

GRACE JONES

Fashion icon Grace Jones is just as much of a legend in the industry now, at the age of 74, as she has ever been.

Boasting an age-defying figure, she has recently fronted a campaign for luxury lingerie brand, Wolford.

The 74-year-old model, who is the new face for the luxury lingerie brand, bared plenty of skin for the shot, which received an outpouring of praise from her fans on social media.

Upon coming across the photos on Wolford’s Instagram account, many admitted to initially thinking the images were ‘throwbacks’ since she looks so young.

Another joked: ‘Suspecting and really hoping Grace Jones is some kind of eternal being.’

Last year she also wowed fans with a sensational performance at the Cambridge Club Festival.

She opened with the title track of her 1981 album Nightclubbing, while a cover of Amazing Grace showcased her flawless vocal range.

While her amazing voice left the audience spellbound, her showstopping outfit and age-defying looks, too, left people reeling.

She donned all-black, with an elaborate feathered headpiece and a gold skull mask.
