Live UEFA Euro 2024, 1.30pm, RTÉ2

The first full day of football at Euro 2024 begins with Hungary v Switzerland (KOpm). Tony O’Donoghue presents coverage of the Group A match from Cologne Stadium.

This is Hungary’s third consecutive appearance at the finals, having previously not qualified since the knockouts back in 1972.

Their opponents today have a strong recent record in major finals, making it out of the group stages on the last five occasions.

Then at 4.30pm, the focus moves to the Olympiastadion in Berlin, as Group B – the so-called Group of Death – gets under way as Spain meet Croatia (KO 5.00pm).

Spain have won two of the last four European Championships, in 2008 and 2012, during a dominant era for the Spanish national team, as they also won the 2010 World Cup.

Croatia have made waves over the last six years in major tournaments, finishing as runners-up and in third place in the last two World Cups, but their record in Euros finals is relatively poor.

At 7.30pm Peter Collins presents coverage of Italy v Albania, the Group B match from BVB Stadion Dortmund, as the current holders (above) play their first match of this year’s finals.

Italy will be looking to become the first country since Spain in 2012 to successfully defend the title – but coach Spalletti’s squad lacks quality.

This is only Albania’s second-ever appearance at a major competition, having previously taken part in Euro 2016, but are the classic banana skin for an Italian side that needs a winning start.

Later… with Jools Holland, 9.55pm, BBC Two

Among those taking to the stage at Alexandra Palace Theatre in north London is Sheffield singer-songwriter Richard Hawley (below), who plays a couple of songs from his latest album In This City They Call You Love.

Also appearing are American pop singer Remi Wolf, Bradford-born producer and DJ Nia Archives, US singer-songwriter Stephen Wilson Jr and Somali singer Sahra Halgan.

Rebus, 9.00pm, BBC Two

Switching channels for the football, fans of Rebus should note that the edgy Scottish drama is on BBC Two tonight, and not BBC One.

In the wake of a horrific attack, Rebus faces difficult questions from Gill Templer and Malcolm Fox about his dealings with both Cafferty and Michael.

Faced with further tragedy, the detective and his brother must set aside their grievances with each other to exact retribution.

Rhona makes good on her offer to help Chrissie and her family, while Siobhan’s investigation receives a breakthrough from an unexpected source.

Here’s an Irish drama, with an impressive cast that includes Andrew Scott, Cillian Murphy, Eva Birthistle and Catherine Walker.

Two couples in suburban Dublin appear to live in marital bliss. That is until cracks begin to appear in both seemingly steady marriages.

Taxi Driver, 10.00pm, TG4

Martin Scorsese’s classic drama, starring Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd and Harvey Keitel. Bernard Hermann’s atmospheric soundtrack also stars.

De Niro is mesmeric as Travis Bickle, an isolated, misanthropic New York cab driver who becomes increasingly disturbed by the corruption and seediness he sees all around him.

That’s followed at 5.30pm by Rugbaí Beo on TG4 as the action moves to Thomond Park as Munster host Glasgow Warriors (KO 6pm) for the remaining place in the Grand Final.

The Saturday Game, 10.50pm, RTÉ2

Highlights of the day’s GAA Championship action, including Clare v Donegal, Cork v Tyrone, Cavan v Roscommon and Derry v Westmeath in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
