Where Trevor Lawrence’s 5M Contract Ranks Among Mahomes, Burrow, More NFL QBs

The Jacksonville Jaguars locked up Trevor Lawrence on Thursday, signing the quarterback to a massive five-year extension worth $275 million.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the extension includes $200 million guaranteed and $142 million at signing. He also has a $37.5 million signing bonus.

Here’s how Lawrence’s contract ranks compared to the other highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL on an average annual basis, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

  • Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: $55 million
  • Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: $55 million
  • Jared Goff, Detroit Lions: $53 million
  • Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers: $52.5 million
  • Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens: $52 million
  • Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles: $51 million

Here’s Lawrence’s deal compared to his peers based on the total value of his new contract, via Over The Cap:

  • Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs: $450 million
  • Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: $275 million
  • Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: $275 million
  • Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers, $262.5 million
  • Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens, $260 million
  • Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills, $258 million

Despite his production slipping a bit in 2023, Lawrence has met most of the expectations that were placed upon him when he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Over the past two seasons, the 24-year-old has completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 8,129 yards and 46 touchdowns compared to 22 interceptions. He’s also started to expand his abilities as a runner, racking up a career-high 339 rushing yards in 2023 while finding the end zone four more times on the ground.

Lawrence hasn’t been worried about the extension process during the offseason, telling reporters on June 3 that he believed a deal would eventually get done.

“Obviously, I’m aware of what’s going on, but I try to keep my focus on doing my job out here,” he said, via Eric Edholm of NFL.com. “I have full belief that that’ll take care of itself and that’s not something I need to worry about.”

After the Jaguars made it to the divisional round of the playoffs during their 2022 campaign, they were left out of the postseason picture in 2023 by finishing with a record of 9-8. Jacksonville started off the season 8-3, although the team went 1-5 over the final six weeks of the year as Lawrence dealt with separate shoulder and ankle issues.

With the former Clemson standout healthy and boasting a new contract that ranks among the largest in the league, the Jaguars will attempt to return to the playoffs in 2024.
