Willie Mullins sells three horses including one tipped for Cheltenham success

WILLIE MULLINS has sold three horses for relative peanuts – including one already being tipped for Cheltenham Festival success.

The Closutton boss put the trio of runners up for sale in Thoroughbid’s June Sale online and saw What Path go for an auction-topping £27,000.

While that’s still a heck of a lot of money it’s a tiny sum compared to what we see some point-to-pointers go for.

But even they hardly compare to the millions that changes hands for the top Flat prospects.

Nevertheless, though, What Path, We’llhavewan and Cadoudal Saint all sold for £27,000, £11,000 and £9,000 respectively.

Seven-year-old What Path, who ran in the same silks as former Supreme winner Appreciate It and Kilcruit, won three times for Mullins including two hurdle races over three miles.

But punters looking for some early ante-post value might want to take heed of Patrick Mullins’ words.

He rode We’llhavewan to victory in a handicap hurdle at Ballinrobe in May last year.

The nine-year-old was sent off 5-4 fav for a Listed Grand National trial at Punchestown in February this year only to finish second to Where It All Began.

And Patrick reckons one race at the Festival in particular could be on the cards for him.

He told the Racing Post: “We were delighted to get all horses sold, particularly at prices that I should think both vendors and buyers would be happy with.

“What Path has a lot of potential going forward as a chaser, while Cadoudal Saint has youth on his side and could win plenty of races.

“But I think We’llhavewan might be the best value buy.

“He’s the sort of horse who could easily be competitive in some of those valuable staying chases and maybe get to Cheltenham as a Pertemps horse.”

That race sparked a magical few moments for Sir Alex Ferguson this year after he watched his horse Monmiral win the three-mile handicap hurdle at 25-1.

It came before his other horse Protektorat won the Ryanair.

Thorough bid boss James Richardson added: “We’re pleased to have sold a further three horses for the Mullins team.

“Their horses often prove popular for people looking for a good calibre of horse-in-training, while Willie and Patrick seem happy with how easy it is to sell online.”
