Coco Gauff’s serving skills shot her in the food during the French Open 2024. In her semifinal match against Iga Swiatek, Gauff made 3 aces but also hit 4 double faults. During her performance at the Madrid Open this year, she was criticized by industry veterans like Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs. “Everyone talked about the forehand…What the f*ck..again, the serve is killing her.” Calling it a “no-no” Stubbs expressed how the Roland Garros women’s doubles champion is “double faulting outrageously.”
Serena Williams’ former coach highlighted Gauff’s Madrid Round of 16 match against Madison Keys, which Gauff lost due to errors in her serving skills. Gauff made 13 double faults, which forced her exit from the tournament after a defeat against Keys by 6-7, 6-4, 4-6. Gauff’s admirers have since been concerned with the American WTA star’s serving skills. Following in the Italian Open, Gauff’s double faults increased to 41 in just four matches.
American legend Andy Roddick also highlighted how Gauff’s double faults stopped her from entering the tennis’s top three with Swiatek, Rybakina, and Sabalenka. “I think Coco was in that conversation, post-US Open last year. I think she’s maybe struggled a little bit more, a lot of double faults,” said Roddick.

Following the opinions of two tennis experts, Rennae Stubbs and Andy Roddick, it seemed that Gauff really needs to focus on improvising her serving skills before Wimbledon. However, the reigning US Open champion is focused on improving her game as she revealed dedication to making her serve error-free.
Coco Gauff reveals the “focus” when tackling improvement on her serve
In the Roland Garros, Gauff defeated Jessica Pegula to reach the tournament’s semifinals against Swiatek. After defeating Pegula, Gauff spoke about her faulty serving skill and said, “I’ve been working on it, I think for me the focus will be getting more first serves in. I think my first-serve percentage was low, but my win percentage was in the high 70s or something like that. I think once I can get that down… There’s definitely technical changes I’m trying to make.”
