A woman in her 60s has died after being struck in the head by a golf ball.
According to police on Thursday, the woman was fatally hit by a golf ball at a golf course in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, at around 9:10 a.m. She was transported to a nearby hospital by which time she was already in full cardiac arrest.
She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
It is unclear whether the incident was the result of any safety rule violation. Police said they investigating the case.
This was the latest in a string of of unsettling golfing incidents in the last month.
On June 13, a man in his 60s was hospitalized with an eye injury after being struck by a golf ball at a golf course in Gapyeong, a northeastern county in the same province. On May 31, two people were injured as a result of a golf cart accident in Icheon.
With golf gaining popularity in recent years, the number of such incidents has been on the rise. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, 11,468 cases of golf injury were reported in 2022, compared with 6,475 in 2017.
