Women’s U.S. Open 2024 Golf Odds And Featured Groups With Nelly Korda’s Dominance And Lexi Thompson’s Retirement

The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open is set to tee off May 30 at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. The storylines include Nelly Korda shooting for her 7th LPGA victory this year, again as the prohibitive favorite, and Lexi Thompson announcing her retirement from the LPGA Tour at the age of 29.

Lexi Thompson will compete in the 2024 U.S. Open, and retire at the end of this year, at least from a full time schedule.

“While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time,” Thompson said via Instagram. “At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule. I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year as there are still goals I want to accomplish.”

I talked to Lexi Thompson when she beat the odds and competed in a men’s PGA Tour event last year in Las Vegas. Her presence and impact at the Shriners Children’s Open extended well beyond the ropes.

Players And Storylines To Watch At The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open

Now it’s Nelly Korda who is dominating the world of golf, along with Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour. Korda is flying high, not only with her major sponsors Delta Air Lines, Goldman Sachs, Nike, TaylorMade Golf and T-Mobile, but with six wins in her last seven starts as the singular star of the LPGA Tour. Her stats profile is off the charts elite too.

The Par 70 Lancaster Club plays to 6,583 yards and features bentgrass fairways and greens. The course “handsomely rewards those with strong tee-to-green games and high ball flights,” according to the Fried Egg preview. Guess who has both? With those attributes and her newly improved short game and putting, it really feels like Nelly controls her own destiny.

Norda is the No. 1 ranked women’s golfer, and she’s the prohibitive favorite at +330 odds (just higher than 3/1). The next closest competitor is fellow American Rose Zhang. The 25-year-old Norda has already won 14 times on the LPGA Tour, including six of her last seven tournaments this year.

Three Non-Nelly Contenders

The Fried Egg preview notes these major challengers to Nelly Korda.

Rose Zhang made her first professional start one year ago. She’s won twice on the LPGA Tour, including three weeks ago. Zhang also took an extended break from golf while taking a full course load at Stanford this past year. A top-10 finish already in a major, Zhang’s 80% driving accuracy will serve her well on the narrow fairways at Lancaster in hopes of capturing her first major title.

Hannah Green has two wins this year on the LPGA Tour, and finished second most recently in the Mizuho Americas Open after going toe-to-toe with Nelly Korda. Green is shooting to become the fourth Australian woman to win the U.S. Women’s Open. Her motivation to become a professional golfer came while watching from just outside the ropes at Lancaster as fellow Aussie Karrie Webb contended in the 2015 U.S. Open.

Brooke Henderson climbed the leaderboard with a Sunday 66 that was good for a top-five finish in the 2015 U.S. Open at Lancaster. She was just 17 years old then, and now the 2-time major champion is improving with her driver and ranks No. 6 on the LPGA Tour in strokes gained: Total.

Nelly Korda plays in her 10th U.S. Open this week at age 25. Imagine. She commented in Tuesday’s press conference that it’s “Crazy. I feel like this event, getting to play it as a 14-year-old back in the day, was where I realized that this was what I wanted to do for a living.”

Korda added, “This golf course is a beast. It’s going to test every aspect of your golf game and mental game. Off the tee, if you don’t hit it into the fairways, it sinks down into the rough. These greens are smalleer and very, very undulated.”
