X to soon make live streaming exclusive to Premium subscribers

X has confirmed that users will have to be on a paid tier to start a video live stream, but it has not clarified if and when the change will be enforced.

Just a week after making ‘Likes’ private, Elon Musk’s X said it will soon make live stream exclusive to Premium subscribers. In the last few months, X has been constantly adding new features and locking some, like the ability to edit posts, share long-form content among others, behind a paywall.

While the company did not share any information on when the change will be enforced, it will make X the only social media platform that charges users to host a live stream. Other social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and more lets users start a video live stream for free.

According to a recent post by the company’s ‘Live’ account, “Starting soon, only Premium subscribers will be able to live stream. This includes going live from an encoder with X integration.”

While X hasn’t moved some existing features to its subscription tier, there are ample signs that the Elon Musk-owned platform might plan to do so for basic features. Earlier this year in April, Musk confirmed that X would soon start charging a $1 fee for new users who want to post on the platform, and that users would have to pay this annual fee to use basic features such as bookmarking, replying, or liking posts.

However, users who do not pay the fee will still be able to follow other accounts, read posts, and eventually share posts after three months. To give you a quick recap, X Basic, Premium, and Premium+ subscriptions are priced at Rs 215.87, Rs 566.67, and Rs 1,133.33 per month, if paid annually, respectively.
