‘You have to be unrelentingly, 100pc yourself the whole time’ – Conductor David Brophy on his marriage breakdown and his new job in Germany

David Brophy takes classical music seriously — but in a down-to-earth way. It’s that grounding that got him through the end of his marriage, and landed him the role of chief conductor with the Funkhaus Orchestra in Cologne

David Brophy bounds into Dublin’s Gresham Hotel with a bicycle helmet dangling from his bag. He is fizzing with energy. The night before we meet, he had conducted the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Limerick, which went out live on Lyric FM.

Maybe it’s all that fresh air from being on the bike and the remains of adrenaline in his system, but Brophy is buzzing. He has reasons to be cheerful. He has recently gotten a new job. In October, he will start as the chief conductor with the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra in Cologne. He will travel over and work there for a set number of days each year.
