Q I have no interest in private hospital cover and always had good experiences with the public system. My VHI Public Plus Care scheme is due for renewal shortly. I am wondering what is the benefit with this plan in light of the fact that treatment for every citizen of Ireland is free in a public hospital?
A This is a basic plan from VHI designed to cover public hospitals only, said Dermot Goode of TotalHealthCover.ie, a broker. As in-patient treatment in public hospitals is now free, and given that it’s becoming more difficult to access treatment privately in public hospitals, you are correct to question the value-for-money return on this type of plan.
