YouTube Gold: UNC-Maryland In 1981
The 1980’s were probably the greatest era in ACC history. Think about it: UNC won the national title in 1982, NC State in 1983, and Duke’s rise under Mike Krzyzewski was beginning. Then Maryland was very potent under Lefty Driesell, Virginia had Ralph Sampson and Wake Forest was still dangerous. Even Clemson had some fine teams.
This 1981 UNC-Maryland game from Cole Field House was a good one. UNC featured James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Al Wood, Jimmy Black and Mike Pepper.
Maryland had Buck Williams, Albert King, Ernest Graham, Greg Manning and Reggie Jackson.
Driesell was in his 12th year while Dean Smith was in his 20th.
UNC would go on to win this one 76-63, no doubt infuriating the Maryland faithful, but the Tar Heels really ruled the ACC until Coach K caught and passed Smith.
From this game alone, Worthy, Perkins and Willams went on to outstanding pro careers and King did fairly well, although basketball was never his biggest passion. We saw an article with him a good while back and he now owns several fast food restaurants. Turns out he’s much more interested in that. We’re really glad that he’s happy and fulfilled.
Also check out the broadcast crew: Dick Enberg, Billy Packer and Al McGuire had tremendous chemistry. They were a great team.
